Top tips for the best cake smash photoshoot

If you’ve decided to celebrate your little one’s first birthday with a cake smash photoshoot then you might have a few questions about it.

What should my child wear for their photoshoot?

Of course this is entirely your choice but most people choose a special outfit for their baby. This could be an outfit with a “one” on the front, a new dress/suit and maybe accessories such as a party hat or a cute headband.

However, make sure it’s an outfit that you don’t mind getting dirty. A cake smash photoshoot means icing will end up everywhere so choose wisely.

Do I bring my own cake?

Lots of photographers work differently on this one but I like clients to bring their own cake. This is for a number of reasons, you can choose the colours and flavour of the cake, as well as the theme. Bringing your own birthday cake keeps the cost of the photoshoot down and eliminates any risk of allergen contamination for your little one.

When should I book?

As soon as your little one is sitting independently you could book them for their cake smash photoshoot.  A lot of parents want to do it on or around their first birthday. Others do it in advance to use the photos for birthday invitations or thank you cards. It’s also best to ask far in advance so that I’ve got time available to get you in my diary.
